Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan are bringing their respective “Karate Kid” universes together in a single film.
The announcement came during a recent Sony Studios video featuring Macchio, 62, and martial arts icon Chan, 69. Both actors starred in different “Karate Kid” films decades apart. They will collaborate in a fresh franchise picture set to hit theaters on December 13, 2024.
“We’re headlining a new ‘Karate Kid’ movie together,” Macchio stated in the video.
“That’s huge news,” Chan added in the video before revealing a worldwide search for the forthcoming film’s new young star. In conclusion, referencing Mr. Miyagi’s (played by the late Pat Morita) famed “Karate Kid” line, Macchio said, “So let’s wax on, wax off, everyone.”
The new “Karate Kid” movie, which is still untitled, will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle and will seamlessly blend the two distinct cinematic worlds.
Naturally, Macchio launched the franchise with the 1984 film “Karate Kid” and its sequels, “The Karate Kid Part II” and “The Karate Kid Part III,” in addition to reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso in the critically acclaimed Netflix series “Cobra Kai.”
In the original “Karate Kid,” Macchio debuted as young Daniel, who sought guidance from Mr. Miyagi to defend himself from local bullies in his new town.
Chan, an Academy Award winner, portrayed Mr. Han, the Miyagi figure, in the 2010 “Karate Kid” reboot with Jaden Smith.
The new film is anticipated to bring together characters from both the original “Karate Kid” films and the “Cobra Kai” series.
“We’re thrilled to bring these two worlds together and develop a new chapter in the ‘Karate Kid’ saga,” Macchio stated. “We know fans have been eagerly anticipating this, and we’ll deliver.”
The announcement of the new film comes at a time when the “Cobra Kai” series has evolved into a worldwide fenómeno. The show has been recognized for its nostalgia, wit, and action sequences.
Additionally, “Cobra Kai” has been credited with rekindling interest in the original “Karate Kid” movies.
For enthusiasts of the franchise, the new “Karate Kid” movie will undoubtedly be a significant event. We can’t wait to witness what Macchio and Chan have in store for us.
